The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Sociology starting in August 2022. Applicants should have teaching and research specialization in the sociology of race and racism. This is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track position with full benefits. The typical teaching load is two courses per semester.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Sociology or a related field by August of 2022. Candidates are expected to develop a program of teaching and research in the sociology of race and racism. The Department currently has strengths in criminology, inequality, social psychology, and the sociology of religion. Successful candidates will show the potential to produce high-quality scholarship for publication; secure external funding for research; demonstrate the potential for excellent teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are particularly interested in applicants who will expand our research areas and course offerings in one or more of the following areas: anti-Black racism, sociological theories of race and racialization, sociology and decoloniality, systemic racism, institutional racism, racial stratification, critical approaches to race and crime/criminal justice, and/or other related themes. Candidates with a history of and commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students especially underrepresented minoritized students are encouraged to apply as are candidates who will contribute to our department’s and university’s mission of fostering a diverse and inclusive culture.

The WVU Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers B.A. programs in sociology, criminology, and anthropology and has over 600 majors. The Department also offers a PhD in sociology, which includes specializations in four broad areas: crime, law and deviance; inequality, diversity, and equity; social psychology and group processes; and religion. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is home to many scholars who teach and conduct research in the broad area of social justice. The Department recently established an Anti-racism Committee, which initiated an anti-racism undergraduate course and received a grant to host the first Annual Conference on Antiracism Research, Policy, and Education. The Department also houses the Research Center on Violence, the Survey Research Center, and the Religion and Society Research Group.

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area.
